It was the end of the 11thcentury, after a period obscured by fears of worldwide destruction by the year 1000, and a time when land domains were fundamentally based on feudal lords and monasteries. From the 12thcentury, cities began to grow and after the Crusades trading and financial transaction markets started to develop.
This shift from agriculture towards trading corresponds to the transition from phase VI to phase VII of the Piscean Age. If the Pisces Age has the duration of approximately 2160 years (30º x 72 years – equivalent to the first precession resulting from the third Earth movement), dividing this period into 12 sub phases results in 180 years for each house or phase throughout the entire cycle.
During each of the 180-year sub phases, a conjunction between Uranus and Neptune occurs, as the cycle of these planets is approximately 175 years. I would also like to highlight that the planets’ influence on the collective is all the greater the further they are from the Sun. Although the transpersonal planets were not yet known, this doesn’t mean their influence was not reflected on the collective unconscious of humanity at the time.

Thus the beginning of phase VII occurs between 1080and 1260 and symbolizes Libra in this sub-phase of the Age of Pisces. The shift from the Earth element (Virgo) to the Air element (Libra) marks the beginning of a period where contacts, alliances, disputes, the bipolarization and interchange between East and West become important. It is also important to note that phase VII corresponds to the midpoint of the entire Age of Pisces which highlights the climax of the Middle Ages Cycle, named by some as the “12thCentury Renaissance”.
During this period we have the Crusades phenomenon. Pope Urban II convened the first Crusade at the Council of Clermont in 1905 in response to the plead for help from Byzantine Emperor Alexios I to stop the Turkish advancements in the region. The Pope invoked “holy war” and promised indulgences to all involved in it.
The Crusaders conquered Jerusalem in 1099 and a series of conquests and losses between Christians and Muslims originated 9 Crusades through the West until 1272.
The first Crusade prompts the mix of cultures between West and East. We also know that the esoteric phalanxes/branches of each religion communicated and shared knowledge; and the renowned meeting in Constantinople in 1906 marks the conception of what would come to be The Order of the Temple.

“They took the name of Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (the foundation dates 1118 or 1119) for having built the headquarters on what were believed to be the ruins of Solomon’s Temple.
From 1123 onwards it became known as The Order of the Temple of Jerusalem. Despite the modest size, the Order embraced spiritual ideals of peace and charity for the benefit of the weak, who they would defend by arms if necessary. They sought spiritual and legal recognition, especially from papacy.
In 1128 (13thcentury) Pope Honorius II granted legitimacy to the Order’s foundation after St. Bernard of Clairvaux drafted the Rule of the Temple, approved at the Council of Troyes.”
The Crusaders and the Templars in Portugal
According to the Theory of Astrological Ages, Portugal was born as a kingdom-nation in the apogee of the Age of Pisces (in the middle of the 2160-year cycle).
Historical background: Portugal’ Sun Sign is Pisces. This sign was consigned by Ptolemy to the region of Lusitânia (Lux-Citania – Land of the Light). In ancient times the Signs’ energy was attributed by analogy to the temperament of the race and the people. It is appropriate to remember what the Romans said about the Lusitanians when they conquered the Iberian Peninsula: Out there, in the confines of Iberia, there is a people who won’t govern themselves, nor will they allow themselves to be governed.
Before the Crusades to the Holy Land there were the Crusades in the Iberian Peninsula, starting from the region that today is known as Catalonia. One of those knightly incursions from central Europe included the arrival of the Counts Raymond and Henry of Burgundy. They had come circa 1090 to help King Alfonso VI of León and Castille fight the Almoravid Dynasty. After the heroic feats and the help rendered by such distinguished knights, Alfonso VI granted two of his daughters, Urraca and Tareja, thus consigning the Kingdom of Galicia to Raymond of Burgundy and the Portucalense County to Henry of Burgundy in 1095 (according to a few chronicles).
Emerging in the second half of the Age of Pisces, namely in its apogee (period of the Crusades and of the interchange between the two greatest religions at the time: Christianity and Islamism), the Kingdom of Portugal appears associated with another cultural phenomenon: the rise of Military Orders. The greatest of these Orders was undoubtedly that of the Templars, whose role in conquering national territory and in the Kingdom’s foundation was paramount. The Templarism phenomenon is another subject in itself, a different work that does not fit within this one. Nonetheless, I would like to highlight that the esoteric (or gnostic) dimension of Christianity was very much present in its main representatives due to their sympathy towards the hidden church of Christ, represented by St. John.
Our primeval Christianity derived from various Gnostic and Pagan ideologies because its essence already contained the universal nature of the Piscean energy. Or, as Álvaro de Campos put it, tobe everything and everyone, to be plural like the Universe. Our first Kings never appreciated Roman Christianity (some of them were actually excommunicated) as it was too dogmatic, imposing and demagogic: traits inherited from the Roman people atavisms, originating from the Age prior to Christianity: the Aries Age.

The Piscean mission is about diffusing faith – the messianic nature, the need to connect people, to unite them through miscegenation: racial mixture is associated with this sign. We can perceive the Pisces energy as the search for unity in multiplicity. The purpose of the second worldwide phase of the Age of Pisces – diffusing Christianity on the universal plane – was assigned to the Portuguese nation through the revelation of a purpose ulterior to its foundation. I’m referring to the transformational dream that Afonso Henriques had in the famous dawn of the Battle of Ourique. Just like Moses after descending from Sinai, Afonso transfigures, Jesus appears to him in a dream, he is proclaimed King at the beginning of the battle against the 5 Moor kings and imprints the five wounds of Christ in the emblematic five-kin shield. From then on, Henrique the King Priest feels destined to fulfill a purpose, a mission to manifest the transcendent in the immanent, to embody in the material plane what had been inscribed in an ethereal sphere. We often forget that although Mankind makes History, Earth has its own rhythm and cycles (evolution throughout the Ages) combined with other forces and intelligences, etched in domains beyond our tridimensional existence.
From then on Portugal was built upon the Cistercian and Templar ideals. Suffice to remember that D. Afonso Henriques was a descendant from the lineage of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the most prominent religious figure of this period. The main ideologies behind the Order of the Templars and the reforms applied to the Cistercian and Cluny Orders are attributed to St. Bernard, noble from Burgundy. In their esoteric essence, these Orders whose mission was simultaneously spiritual, religious and material, had the objective to implement a Universal Monarchy: the merge between the spiritual power and the temporal power. The same one described in Dante’s vision and which would later inspire the rise of the myth of the Fifth Empire.
As such, it is hardly by chance that St. Bernard of Clairvaux and Pope Eugenius III were represented in Afonso Henriques’ coronation at the Monastery of Alcobaça, (headquarters of the Cistercian Order in Portugal). Back when the House of Burgundy took the Portucalense County, Counts Henry and Raymond already belonged to an aristocracy connected to the ideals of the Cistercian and Cluny Orders. Another no less important fact is that we have a presumed Portuguese knight, Arnaldo da Rocha, as one of the nine Founders of the Order of the Temple.
The Templar Portugal is thus built by Afonso Henriques, assisted by knights who encompass the religious ideals (symbolically attributed to Jupiter and Neptune – rulers of the sign of Pisces) and the conquest ideals (symbolically attributed Mars), and the plan that will lead to the heroic nautical enterprise is thereupon drafted.
The onset of the Kingdom of Portugal in its esoteric sense starts in 1136, although 1128 (year of the Battle of São Mamede) and 1139 (Battle of Ourique) are crucial years for the Kingdom’s founding. The theosophical reduction (the sum of the numbers) of 1136 adds up to 11. In numerology, this is the number associated with planet Uranus. The entire phase from 1080 to 1260 (phase VII of the world cycle, corresponding to the sign of Libra) is consigned to the sub-rulership of Libra during the apogee of the Pisces Age: 2160:12 = 180 years. Conjunctions between Uranus and Neptune happen rhythmically with slight variations every 175 years, hence imprinting their signature in each of these periods of 180 years. These conjunctions encompass periods of great social and collective changes. The purpose of the union between these two planets is to merge the individual and the collective, the mind and the feeling, the East and the West into one unity. During these conjunctions, seeds with potential to open new paths and ideals for all Humanity are planted.
Uranus symbolizes renewal, innovation and freedom. Traditionally he is the esoteric ruler of Libra, which means that at a soul level he seeks to transform and renew the true meaning of human relationships through an individualization that integrates the logic of opposites.
In turn, Neptune in Libra in its illuminated expression asks for openness and understanding of the “Other”. When expressing its delusional or shadow side he spawns projection myths, or forced evangelism based on dogmatism – the desire for others to be a copy of ourselves.
The 7thperiod of the Age of Pisces was the Crusades period, which in its most primary stage brought wars and looting. However, it also brought us into contact with other cultures, with the exchange of ideals and broadening of horizons. The work of Uranus and Neptune in Libra (the first sign of the third collective quadrant) was, at its highest universal expression, one of enmeshing the three largest cultures of that time: Christianity, Islamism and Judaism. The entire third quadrant of the Pisces Age comprises the years between 1080 and 1620. Hence we have Libra, or the 7thperiod, from 1080 to 1260; Scorpio, or the 8thperiod from 1260 to 1440 and Sagittarius or the 9thperiod from 1440 to 1620.
The Burgundy Cycle – the Cycle of Heroes (Uranus and Pluto in Aries)
In phase VII, (1085 to 1265) the first grand conjunction of the slow moving planets (those that stamp great collective events) begins with the conjunction between Uranus and Pluto in Aries in 1090. Here in the West, this corresponds to the arrival of the Counts of Burgundy to the Iberian Peninsula. In addition to the wars, something new, unusual, intense and pioneering would happen in this period. The first Crusade to Jerusalem is proclaimed simultaneously in 1095with the following configuration: Cardinal T-Square between Uranus at 23º/24º Aries, square Neptune at 25º Cancer, square Jupiter at 21º Capricorn.
1109 – Possible/hypothetical year of D. Afonso Henriques’ birth: small triangle between Uranus in Gemini, sextile Neptune in Leo, sextile Pluto in Aries. We have a crescent sextile from Uranus to Pluto as well as a crescent trine between Neptune and Pluto.
1118 – Foundation of the Order of the Templars or Order of the Cavalry of the Temple of Solomon by Hugo de Payens.
Slow moving planets positions: Uranus at 28º Cancer square Pluto at 29º Aries; Neptune at 15º Virgo. The cycle initiated by the conjunction between Uranus and Pluto at 1º Aries in 1090 reaches its first crescent square. The crisis and tension required to create a new foundation (phase IV of the aspect) allow the expansion of the energies involved: the confrontation between energies of the past and the appeal of the future.
1128 – The Order is legitimated by the Pope. Uranus in Virgo, Saturn conjunct Neptune in Libra (formalization of the Order, with Christian support). During this year Afonso Henriques’ mother, D. Teresa, donates the Castle of Soure to the Templars. It is also in this year that the Battle of S. Mamede takes place, leading D. Teresa to relinquish her pretense to unite the Portucalense County with the Galician County.
We currently know that Templar Militiae have entered Portugal during the reign of Dona Teresa, who bequeathed them the village of Fonte Arcada in Penafiel in 1126, before the Pope recognized the Order.
