Some Western astrology students think Vedic astrology is terribly interesting and can’t wait to learn more, others regard it with an abundance of caution, for a variety of possible reasons. You have the Zodiac problem for starters, and there are cultural idiosyncrasies that can baffle, or even irritate. But that aside, the more exciting truth is that Western and Vedic astrology share so much basic DNA that some very significant underlying principles that are only implicit in one system, are made explicit in the other; and for this reason comparison between these systems can lead to a kind of reawakening of a slumbering insight. It’s about restitution and realization of inherent potential rather than a modification of anything fundamental. The intention in this lecture is not to promote haphazard mixing of rules from different astrological traditions and paradigms, but rather to share some specific examples of where a little choice Jyotish can be a tonic that invigorates your current Western astrological practice, focussing on where fruitful cross-pollination is low hanging fruit, pleading to be picked.

Richard Fidler

Richard Fidler has been practising as an astrologer since the early 1990's. Over the years he has developed an eclectic methodology that draws on elements of both Western and Vedic astrology and has therefore often acted as a bridge between these closely related streams of astrology; teaching Western astrology in India, and Jyotish in the West. He is the recipient of several astrology awards, has helped organise conferences in India and South Africa and has served as the chairperson of the Cape Town based Cape Astrology Association. Richard's work has been published in several major astrological journals and he currently resides in Oxfordshire, having relocated to the United Kingdom in 2019. Richard currently serves as the Global Director for ISAR in the United Kingdom.
