Newspaper astrology columns are as old as newspapers themselves
and began to feature more regularly from the 1890s onwards. We shall
look at the development of popular astrology columns and how they became
the 12-sign column we’re familiar with today. In addition to Fun Facts
about how, when and where astrology columns became popular (plus the
people behind them), we will look at the astrological techniques used
and how they changed over time. Finally, we’ll take a more in-depth look
at how a modern horoscope is written and work together to create our own
column. There will be lot of pictures.

Kim Farnell

Kim Farnell has been part of the astrological world since the mid-eighties (which makes her feel very old) and holds the Faculty diploma plus an MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology. She has worked as an astrologer, lectured widely in the UK and overseas, taught classes, has been involved in numerous astrological organisations—and of course, has written lots of horoscopes. With her primary interest being the history of astrology and related subjects, she has worked closely with the Theosophical Society on their history conferences. And she’s written enough books to neatly fill a shelf. Having spent twelve years as President of the Astrological Lodge of London, she recently sought freedom to pursue her PhD and is now happily researching the link between the development of the horoscope column and women’s media. To fill the extra time granted by lockdown, she launched into writing a biography of Cheiro which is now nearing completion. And she has two Siamese cats.
