It is common to acquire a firsthand acquaintance with the archetypes of the zodiac circle by becoming familiar with two criteria of division: the three qualities (cardinal, fixed, mutable) and the four elements (fire, earth, air and water). These two criteria can also be applied simultaneously thereby resulting in a 12-cell zodiac grid. An idea that has recently attracted my attention is to add some philosophical rigor or formality to available sign classifications. I do this by slightly tweaking with the dimension of qualitiesas a power (cardinal)-substance (fixed)-process (mutable) triad and replacing the dimension of elements with Aristotle’s philosophical tetrad of causes (material, efficient, telic and formal). The resulting alternative 12-cell grid provides a serial division of the zodiac beginning with the material triad (Aries, Taurus, Gemini), continuing with the efficient triad (Cancer, Leo, Virgo), then moving onto the telic triad (Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius) and finishing with the formal triad (Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces). Each triad contains three alternative answers to a single question.
