As the luminaries, “Sun” and “Moon” are the bones of a chart, eclipses are also in the heart of astrology. There are many techniques that we use related to the eclipses in the charts, including transits, nodal dynamics, or pre-natal eclipse charts, each in their own way describing the dynamics of the soul’s journey. I would like to focus in this article on the “Pre-Natal Solar Eclipses” and demonstrate how it can guide our understanding about someone’s path.
The Pre-Natal Eclipse is perceived by some astrologers to be a “bridge” between the last incarnation and the present one. Either way, this method brings qualified information about a person’s struggles and purposes for his or her current life according to the knowledge of the “soul”.
The Pre-Natal Solar Eclipse (PNE) is the nearest solar eclipse that occurred prior the birth of the person. The chart for that event can be used on its own, like a natal chart, and also with the natal chart. The rules to analyze the PNE chart are almost the same with reading a natal chart, with only a difference in understanding: A PNE chart is the chart of the “soul” which keeps one’s pure nature, intensions, tendencies, abilities and goals to achive. When Natal Chart is compared with PNE chart, the natal chart accepted as a materialization base. This materialization is sometimes not able to achieve what “soul” has tendency. So the life’s process begins at this dilemma. Here are the most important parts to mention in a PNE chart reading:
Placement of Solar Eclipse
The most valuable thing to begin looking at is where is the eclipse taking place, in which house and which sign. These placements show the struggles or the gifts that person brings with his or her incarnation. Whether we believe in reincarnation or not, there is an accurate information hidden in this eclipse chart for each of us about our coming to life, showing the main things we are dealing with and why. What are the lessons that our life path wants to teach us? The ruler of the eclipse and its aspects are also important.
Definition of The Souls Characteristics
Ascendant is the major tool to understand souls personality, attitude to life and nature in a PNE chart. The sign of the Ascendant gives valuable information about possible karmic issues, deeper motivations of a person. In addition to that, the whole PNE charts planets, positions all refers to the nature of the souls qualities. Each house can be read as a natal chart to define the soul. The more the natal chart and the PNE Charts are in a harmony, the more one achieves his / her mission for life. A harmony between charts is a harmony in elements and properties of signs and aspects.
Planets: Retro, Direct and Changing Sign
Conditions of planets in PNE charts are also worth to consider. When interpreting both charts, the PNE chart and the natal chart of a person, it’s important to note down which planet goes direct or which planet goes retro in natal chart. When a retro Mercury goes direct in natal chart, that suggests person can feel a limitation in her soul capasity of expression.
In addition, planets which change sign in natal chart suggest, the quality of the planet which changes sign is transferred to the new sign in natal chart. For example a Venus in Taurus in PNE, when changes in to Venus Gemini in natal chart, it means this Gemini Venus actually has the Venus Taurus capasity in it and be decoded the Venus with that Taurus also. That means, Venus can seem mutable and in Air element but also has the strength of fixed sign and a need of materalization with earth sign in it. This means it functions with not only mutable and air.
The Node with the Sun and Moon
As in Nodal Dynamics, it’s important if there is a planet whether with South node or North node. The node with a planet shows an emphasis. In PNE Charts, when Sun and Moon conjuction is with South node, this is more likely a malefic position. This is a less harmanious placement for the soul and the materialized life (natal chart). The reason is the South node’s nature in which one needs to get ridd of the old habits and loads. Whether these habits come from a previous incarnation or they are DNA factors, these issues can create barriers in process of life. Life goals doesn’t mean only material success. This is a completement of a soul with taking it’s responsibility for existence, doing his/her job for the whole. A PNE chart suggests a life goal for a bigger plan in the universe which is for everyone’s highest good.
When the Sun and Moon are with North node, this suggests one has an ease on achieving what he/she brings with the soul.
Let us practice these principles. Below is the natal chart of Louise L. Hay. Louise L. Hay, born in 8th October 1926, an American healer and motivational author and the founder of the HayHouse, she has authored several self-help books.
She will be 91 years old and has an interesting life story. First, let me share her chart and life story:
“Hay recounted her life story in an interview with Mark Oppenheimer of the New York Times in May 2008. In it Hay stated that she was born in Los Angeles to a poor mother who remarried Louise's violent stepfather. She recounted that when she was about 5, she was raped by a neighbor. At 15 she dropped out of high school without a diploma, became pregnant and, on her 16th birthday, gave up her newborn baby girl for adoption. She then recalled she moved to Chicago, where she worked in low-paying jobs. In 1950 she moved on again – to New York. She explained that at this point she changed her name and began a career as a fashion model. She achieved success, working for Bill Blass, Oleg Cassini and Pauline Trigère. In 1954 she married the English businessman Andrew Hay, but went on to tell how, after 14 years of marriage, she felt devastated when he left her for another woman.
Hay said that about this time she found the First Church of Religious Science on 48th Street, which taught her the transformative power of thought. Hay revealed that here she studied the New Thought works of authors like Florence Scovel Shinn, who claimed that positive thinking could change people’s material circumstances, and the Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes, who taught that positive thinking could heal the body.
By Hay's account, in the early 1970s she became a Religious Science practitioner. In this role she led people in spoken affirmations, which she believes would cure their illnesses, and became popular as a workshop leader. She also recalled how she had studied Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at the Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa.
Hay described how in 1977 or 1978 she was diagnosed with "incurable" cervical cancer, and how she came to the conclusion that by holding on to her resentment for her childhood abuse and rape she had contributed to its onset. She reported how she had refused conventional medical treatment, and began a regime of forgiveness, coupled with therapy, nutrition, reflexology and occasional enemas. She claimed in the interview that she rid herself of the cancer by this method, but, while swearing to its truth, declared that there is no doctor left alive who can confirm this story. Mark Oppenheimer, New York Times magazine, May 4, 2008. Accessed May 2008.”
To begin with her chart, Louise Hay is a Leo rising, and experienced significant success in the course of her thirties when she worked as a fashion model (the glamor of Leo). She presented many speeches on self-developement and had the charisma to promote her ideas.
I want to point that her South node is in Capricorn, in sixth house and the North Node is in Cancer in the 12th house. This Capricorn South Node describes that she had to confron health issues such as vagina cancer, earlier on in her life, and also the anxiety kind of problems until she developes her thinking system. Her most affirmations are about “safety”, refers to a Capricorn South node.
Louise Hay mentions in her books that she struggled to find her emotional balance because of the abuse she endured and her difficult mother-daughter issues.
She has an abuse history during her childhood, including the rape of a neighbour. She has a Pluto conjuct the North Node, describing a strong need for transformation to master her North Node. They are placed in 12th house, the place of the subconcious and the collective concious, the masses. Her work is based on “positive thinking”, “affirmations”, transforming the subconcious through a thinking training. This is actually a self training which she teaches in her seminars and her books to everyone, to think positively and to make it a life time habbit.
Her bestseller book, “Power Thoughts” initially seems very plain at first sight. However, we can identify in it her fundamental need for survival, as depicted in the Cancer North Node. She always repeats these affirmations in her books:
“All is well.” “I’m safe.” “Everything is working out for my highest good.”
These affirmations helped her restructure her subconsious (12th House) and find a better emotional balance (Cancer).
She also had a cancer, reflected in Pluto in the sign of Cancer in the 12th house (health related), and that experience transformed her whole life. When she learned that she had Cancer, she was a religious minister in a church, giving courses to her students. She notes in her books that, despite what she teaches about positive toughts, students were keeping the negative mind conditions and having troubles in life. Then she realized that she was to go deeper, she was suppressing her emotions and not really healing.
This is the time Pluto in Cancer symbolism began to work in a transformative way in her life. This is an emotional transformation due to her “feminine” organs related with Cancer and Moon which is the ruler of it. She meets many life coachs, learns emotional healing techniques. Her famous mirror work technique and some others appear in this time of her search. She developes a new system first to establish her own emotional situation and this makes her use the system for others later then.
Louise Hay’s Pre-Natal Solar Eclipse
Her Pre-Natal Eclipse was at 16 degrees Cancer, on the North Node, conjunct Pluto in the 8th house.
Not surprisingly, we can see through this PNE chart that she had to confront death through her illness. She had to transform to survive. You see the Capricorn Antivertex conjuct with
South Node that wanting a balance from her between Capricorn and Cancer qualities. Antivertex suggest a “reaction to life” with a system, a healthy control in the personal resources, the second house. This is also third house in Whole Sign which explains her mind training system.
On the other hand, South node shows this person has a stong control need as the shadow side of it, which must be left for achieving North Node in Cancer. North Node is also 9th house in Whole Sign, explaining her thinking systems connection with religion.
The ruler of the South Node, Saturn, is in Scorpio and in 12th house, close to the Part of Fortune. This placement describes the scaring and limitations experienced as a result of deep emotional pain on a personal and collective scale. The Part of Fortune in this place shows where the opportunities can come in this regard.
Mars in Aries in the 5th house squares the eclipse, describing a battle, possibly related to with self love and personal development (Aries in the 5th house). Indeed, she refers to self-love issues in her books.
Uranus in the 4th house shows her alienation from her roots, the motherland, similar to the Cancer symbolism. Jupiter in Aquarius shows her teaching skills and her innovative ideas that inspire large groups.
With reference to the masses we can see that the strong emphasis in the sign of Cancer in the 8th house shows how she is easily affected by other people’s emotions or jugdments. In her book, she mentioned that initially she was conducting one on one consultations with her clients. But that was too consuming and she became sick. She subsequently decided to work on a more collective level instead. The chart does its job again with Jupiter in Aquarius in the 3rd house. She began to write and give seminars and educate other teacher like her to achieve her goal.
Retro PNE Saturn in the 12th house shows her imprisonment in emotional level and having a difficulty achieving a healthy life “system” in the soul level. This Saturn goes direct in natal chart and helps her to dicipline her life and her emotional system. PNE Retro Saturn also may be read as a past life debt to be paid with a system establishing for “the “collective”. The person feels the retro as an inability, a interruption in the soul with retro.
Direct PNE Mars in Aries in the 5th house, goes Retro and changes sign into Taurus, suggests that this was a urge and a ease motivation for the soul, to move with self-love and to live for her own needs and care herself (5th Mars in Aries) but in pshycial atmosphere, it became a torture (Mars in Taurus) to be comfortable with body and love it. This gave her a motivation to achieve the souls capasity.
Louise Hay Natal Chart (inner Wheel) and Pre-Natal Solar Eclipse (outer wheel)
In addition to the previous statements, you can see the Chiron on top of the chart (MC).
She has the most pain and that becomes her a famous healer (MC). Eclipse in Cancer shows health problems are very important achieving the souls goal. Let’s see if she achieves the PNE charts goals:
“In 1976, Hay wrote her first book Heal Your Body, which began as a small pamphlet containing a list of different bodily ailments and their “probable” metaphysical causes. This pamphlet was later enlarged and extended into her book You Can Heal Your Life, published in 1984 As of February 2008, it was second on the New York Times miscellaneous paperback best-sellers list in New York Times, February 23, 2008.
Around the same time she began leading support groups for people living with H.I.V. or AIDS which she called "Hay Rides". These grew from a few people in her living room to hundreds of men in a large hall in West Hollywood. Her work with AIDS patients drew fame and she was invited to appear on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “Donahue” in the same week, in March 1988. Following this, You Can Heal Your Life immediately landed on the New York Times best-seller list. More than 50 million copies sold around the world in over 30 languages.”
As we can see the Solar Eclipse chart, in a close relation to the natal chart, shows a summary of the “main lesson” that one learns in this life. If the one succeeds to master these lessons, positive results and opportunities can aries. Louise Hay now has many books published, and she spent last fifty years of her life in wealth and health as she developed her career as a publisher and writer in the healing field. She established her publishing company Hay House, which is a big loving healing community. Cancer means “family” also, this company supported many authors and spiritual teachers like Wayne Dyer, Doreen Virtue and still so. People in Hay House are giving seminars and writing books also, following Hay’s teachings. And their main focus is “self-love” and “love for all” as a key of emotional security lack in Cancer.
I want to dedicate this article to Louise L. Hay, because she also transformed my life at many points. Her North Node in Cancer in the 12th house shows she was a great mother figure to many people, including myself. I think her chart is inspiring for understanding our own missions too.
With love and light.
