Oner Doser – Reformation of Religion and Spiritual Awakenin

Following the Jupiter ingress in Sagittarius on November 8, 2018, we will be gaining greater visions and concepts related to religions, beliefs, philosophies and our views of life. We will also experience the influences of the square between Jupiter in Sagittarius and Neptune in Pisces. Of course, while this may be associated with disorganization, disintegration and chaos in religious and divine issues, we may also perceive it as a type of spiritual awakening.

To forecast the influences of a planet’s ingress in a certain sign, we need to have a look at its previous transits in that sign. I will be doing this, but I will not just focus on the previous periods when Jupiter was in Sagittarius. I will focus on the years 1520 and 1521 when Jupiter was in Sagittarius and also when Uranus was in Taurus; Neptune was in Pisces; and Pluto was in Capricorn as they are now.

Martin Luther, the Great Reformer

One of the leading names I will mention in this article is Martin Luther. As a reminder, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517. He also sent his 95 Theses to a few bishops and some friends but he did not expect or receive a prompt response. By the end of 1517, however, copies of the 95 Theses had been printed in Leipzig. Some humanists and princes passionately approved of the theses, but parts of the Roman Church completely rejected them. 

The enforcement of the ban on the Ninety-five Theses fell to the secular authorities. On April 18, 1521, Luther appeared as ordered before the Diet of Worms. This was a general assembly of the estates of the Holy Roman Empire that took place in Worms, a town on the Rhine. It was conducted from January 28 to May 25, 1521, with Emperor Charles V presiding. The Pope excommunicated Luther but Luther refused to recant and burnt the Papal bull of excommunication in public. This began the Protestant Reformation.

Below you may see the chart of January 28, 1521, which is the day Diet of Worms got started, projected on Luther’s natal chart.

In this chart, transit Jupiter on Sagittarius 18° triggers Uranus in Luther’s chart. This transit indicates that Luther is passing through radical changes in religious issues and beliefs. Uranus is transiting on Taurus 16° and Luther’s MC while it is also in opposition with his Saturn-Venus-Sun stellium. This transit also indicates a revolt against the existing conditions. The native is experiencing a kind of awakening and reflecting it to the others. Transit Neptune, which is at the first degree of Pisces, makes a trine with Luther’s Mars, so the native is ready to take action as a result of this spiritual awakening. Additionally, Pluto at Capricorn 10° makes a square with Luther’s natal Moon. This indicates that the native is tempted to use his leadership skills. Transit Lunar Nodes also trigger their natal positions. The native is in a period when he may realize his fated missions. All these indicators show us that the native is passing through a critical period and an awakening which incites him energizes the others as well.

Religious reformer of Switzerland: Huldrych Zwingli

The Reformation movement within Germany diversified almost immediately, and other reform movements arose. Living in the Canton of Zurich, reformer priest of Zurich’s main church, Huldrych Zwingli, built a Christian theocracy in Zürich in which church and state joined for the service of God. Zwingli agreed with Luther in the centrality of the doctrine of justification by faith, but he espoused a much more radical understanding of the Eucharist. When a vacancy occurred among the canons of the Grossmünster, Zwingli was elected to fulfill that vacancy on April 29, 1521. In later years the city government approved Zwingli’s reforms, and Zurich became a Protestant city.

In the chart below, you may see the chart of April 29 1521 projected on Huldrych Zwingli’s chart. As I am not sure about the hour of birth, I erected the chart based on the midday.

In this chart, transit Jupiter on Sagittarius 22° triggers Uranus and Mercury in Zwingli’s chart and activates the potential of reform and a protest against the existing system. Additionally, transit Uranus at Taurus 20° is opposed to natal Saturn. It is time for him to break the rules, objecting to traditional structures and to reform them. Neptune at Pisces 3° makes a trine to natal Mars and perhaps (if he was born at the afternoon) it triggers the natal Moon. This indicates a spiritual awakening and mobilizes him to take action. Pluto at Capricorn 11° is triggering Zwingli’s Venus-Pluto square. It is the right time for a total transformation and reorganization.

A Saint: Ignatius of Loyola

While defending the citadel of Pamplona against the French, Ignatius of Loyola was gravely wounded by a cannonball on May 20, 1521, sustaining a bad fracture of his right leg and damage to his left. This event closed the first period of his life, during which he was, on his own admission, “a man given to the vanities of the world, whose chief delight consisted in martial exercises, with a great and vain desire to win renown” (Autobiography, 1).

In the chart below, the chart of the day when he was wounded in the battle is projected on Ignitus’ chart. Here, transit Jupiter triggers natal Mercury and it is about to apply to make a conjunction with Neptune. Transit Neptune makes a trine to natal Jupiter. The values he believe are about to disintegrate. It is the time for a spiritual awakening! Additionally, transit Uranus conjoins Natal South Node. So, the native is open to radical shifts and changes in direction during this period. As transit South Node triggers natal Moon, his peaceful characteristics which are promised in the chart will reach the surface. Transit Pluto triggers natal Sun and at the same time he is in a Saturn cycle. This seems to be a fated period, all his life seems to transform totally.

It is the second period of Ignatius’s life, in which he turned toward a saintly life which he is better known. After treatment at Pamplona, he was transported to Loyola in June 1521. There his condition became so serious that for a time it was thought he would die.

While recuperating, Ignatius Loyola experienced a conversion. Reading the lives of Jesus and the saints made Ignatius happy and aroused desires to do great things. Ignatius realized that these feelings were clues to God’s direction for him.

Over the years, Ignatius became expert in the art of spiritual direction. He collected his insights, prayers, and suggestions in his book the Spiritual Exercises, one of the most influential books on the spiritual life ever written. With a small group of friends, Ignatius Loyola founded the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits. Ignatius conceived the Jesuits as “contemplatives in action.” This also describes the many Christians who have been touched by Ignatian spirituality.

Through these samples, I wanted to emphasize what we expect from Jupiter’s Sagittarius transit along with the other planetary alignments. We will see what kind of religious reforms we will experience during this period. Let’s hope the spiritual awakening brought by this energy will pave the way for a wiser humanity.
